When properly installed metal roofs can last a very long time, 50+ years. Metal roofs have greater impact resistance if a large branch would to fall on it. Metal roofs also shed snow much quicker, so ice damning isn't an issue.
Metal Cons:
Not all metal roofs last a long time. Standing Seam metal roofs last a very long time because the fastener that hold it in place are not exposed to the elements. Exposed fastener type of metal roof is another very common type. Its less expensive but the fasteners need to be replaced roughly every 10 years to ensure the roof stays leak proof. The replacement of those fasteners is an added cost that homeowners need to factor into their decision. Standing Seam metal roofs are more expensive to install than asphalt roofs. Finally, repair work on metal is much more difficult and more expensive than asphalt roofing as it usually involves replacing full metal panels.
